Slug City

Exploring the secret world of Slugs .. & Snails

Three Facts you need to know about Molluscs ...

Fact 1 - Slugs love a drink & can detect the merest whiff of alcohol from afar

Fact 2 - Snails detest Alcohol - But love taking advantage of Drunken Slugs

Fact 3 - Both are Hermaphrodites, having both Male & Female bits

These 3 facts alone usually lead to some of the most Amazing Garden Parties

You can generally think of Slugs a bunch of 'Lads' going out on the town in search of a Good time.

They'd normally be happy chewing a nice bit of Parsley, fighting over some moss, or maybe a bit of Nookie behind the back of the Hosta's.

But what if we throw a few Beers & a bit of Rock music into the mix?
Will they overcome the various Challenges and make it to the Drink?

Round 1: Slugs vs Eggshells
Round 2: Slugs vs Soot
Round 5 : Slugs vs Grease
As a change to the usual Nightly Challenges, a group of

Slugs recently got together to form the :-

Mollusc Amateur Dramatic Society's Historical Impersonation Troupe

This is their 1st re-enactment of a recent historical event, although to be honest, I think they just wanted to make a Sex Tape :-

From Russia with Slug - (The Hunt for Edward Snowden)
Slug City - Origins.... From Anthropomorphism to Zoography

It all started when I got hold of one of those wildlife camera's:
Cue the Video..
Their desire for alcohol thus drove me to make the featurette - Slug City:
Seth gives a sexy smile for the Camera
Fancy making your own Mollusc Movie?

I've described a few of the techniques I used in the video's below, So if you fancy giving it a go yourself, then just send a link to your finished video to the email address at the foot of the page & I'll link to it on here.
Together we can halt the onslaught of viral kitten video's ...

Filming Techniques

Timelapse Photography - A process which effectively 'Speeds-up' Time

In simple terms, individual photo's are taken at set intervals ranging from a few seconds to maybe hours or even days apart.

These photos are then 'assembled' as frames of a movie & played back at say 25 or 30 frames per second, fps.

So for instance, in the Slug City video, the camera may have been set to take a picture at 10 second intervals = 6 per minute. So After 5 minutes it has taken 30 pictures.

If these are now played back at 30 fps, then each second of video footage corresponds to 5 minutes of real time - effectively speeding up real time.

How to take a photo at preset intervals

This depend on the type of camera you have - A few models have an inbuilt timelapse mode, but most others - especially DSLR's rely on some form of external triggering device - called an Intervalometer - (Interval - Meter), which can be picked up for as little as £15 from most camera shops & either Amazon or Ebay .

Another method which works with most Canon compact camera's is called CHDK,

where a small program is first installed on the SD card which gives the camera many

extra functions including an intervalometer. See this Wiki CHDK link for more details.

One of the main critical things to remember when setting up to shoot a timelapse

sequence is to ALWAYS USE A TRIPOD.

If the camera moves even slightly in the middle of a sequence,

then the overall effect of the subsequent video will appear jerky.

A similar thing can be said about shooting timelapses of for

instance outdoor plants, as any slight breeze on the opening

flower will spoil the finished video.

In the sequence below, most plants were set up indoors against

a consistant light source such as a camera flash to minimise any

adverse lighting due to clouds or night.

You can easily spot the sequences that were filmed in just the

ambient sunlight, as they appear to go light & dark usually due

to passing clouds & the movement of the sun. One way to avoid this, is to take the photographs with the aid of a flash gun.

You need the Flashguns light to be a greater than the ambient

in order to counteract any irregular changes, so that the all the

shots in the sequence have exactly the same exposure.
